Understanding the Initial Feel
If you just unboxed your new Serpion pool cue and took a few practice shots, you probably noticed something right away. The tip feels hard and firm.
This is completely normal and is actually exactly what you want out of the box. It is the first sign that you are playing with a genuine premium pool cue.
The Premium Leather Difference
Lower quality cues often use single piece sponge tips. They feel very soft on day one, but they quickly mushroom out of shape and lose their consistency after just a few games.
Serpion cues are built for longevity and performance. We use multiple layers of genuine premium pigskin tightly pressed together. This high density construction creates an incredibly durable tip built for professional accuracy. Because it is so dense right from the factory, it simply needs a little bit of time to settle into its final form.
What Happens During the Settling Phase
When your cue arrives, the very top surface of the leather is incredibly smooth. A completely smooth surface cannot hold chalk very well. When you hit the cue ball without enough chalk gripping the leather, the shot sends a stiff shock down the shaft. This lack of chalk friction is the main reason the tip feels so hard at first.
All brand new layered tips require a settling phase of about 5 to 6 hours of normal play. During your first few games, two important things happen:
Internal Compression
The force of striking the cue ball causes the inner layers of the pigskin to tightly pack together and mold to the mechanics of your specific stroke.
Natural Scuffing
You do not need to aggressively file or shape the leather. Through repeated use on the table, the smooth top layer will naturally scuff itself.
Reaching Peak Performance
As the top layer scuffs naturally, it will begin to hold chalk perfectly. Once the layers have fully compressed and the surface grips the chalk, that initial hard feeling vanishes entirely.
The tip will start to grip the cue ball effortlessly and deliver a buttery and responsive hit. This increased friction is exactly what gives you maximum control, accuracy, and spin on every shot.
Please allow this natural settling process to happen before evaluating the feel of your new tip. Give the leather a few hours of table time to reach its final shape. Once it settles, you will get to experience exactly how your Serpion cue was designed to play.
